The first Football Club was formed ready for the 1958-59 season. A meadow on the Diss road belonging to Church Farm was used. This meadow was used all the week for cattle and these had to be kept off the pitch while a game was in progress. On the opposite side of the road, just into Wash Lane, stood an old green caravan and this was used as Shelfanger Football Club's changing room for the players. In 1960 Shelfanger players were second in the South Norfolk Division and they won the Players Aid Shield in 1964.

Shelfanger still has a team today, with players from surrounding villages and of course they now use the playing field behind the Village Hall. A lad's team with boys from Winfarthing and Shelfanger was formed to play in the Diss and District Lads' League for the 1980-8 1 season and ran for three years. In 1980-81 they came second in the League and in 198 1-82 were second from the bottom, winning only one game. However in 1982-83 they gained a Gateway Building Society Award when there were runners up.
